Bang! Bang! Gavrilo Princip …

Bang, bang, shoot me Gavrilo
Bang, bang, the first six are for you

Bang, bang, the seventh is for me
Bang, bang, Gavrilo Princip
Bang, bang, Europe’s going to weep
(Franz Ferdinand – All For You, Sophia)

The band with an Austro-Hungarian Archduke name wrote a song called All For You, Sophia about said Austro-Hungarian Archduke … on the day he was assassinated, 101 year ago.

Rose-Franz-Ferdinand-and-wife-SophieIt was June 28th 1914 when the Archduke was assassinated, along with his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg. It was Gavrillo Princip, who pulled the trigger on him. A 19 year old member of Young Bosnia, a revolutionary movement with school kids as its members.

The Archduke passed away with loving words to his wife, who was dying next to him of a shot to her abdomen, “Sopherl! Sopherl! Sterbe nicht! Bleibe am Leben für unsere Kinder! – Sophie dear! Don’t die! Stay alive for our children!” and a chain reaction effect called World War I.

While they were on a process of finding names with a telly on, one of the lads, Alex, saw that the box was playing a horse race, and one of the horses’ name was The Archduke, he asked his friends, “Remember that Archduke, Franz Ferdinand?”

And today, when you search the name ‘Franz Ferdinand’ on Google, the band’s Wikipedia page was shown before the real historical figure.

“I like the idea that, if we become popular, maybe the words Franz Ferdinand will make people think of the band instead of the historical figure”
~ Paul Thomson, Franz Ferdinand’s drummer.
